The home reno show has been much loved by Australians for decades with much loved Better Homes and Garden running since 1995, and The Block for over 10 years after starting in 2003.
But is that all set to change? And are Australians sick of having to sit through the carry-on of contestants?
So far we’ve seen dummy spits and phone throwing on The Block this year. While last year’s House Rules had its own ‘vilan’. It makes you wonder why Channel 7 and Channel 9 keep making home renovation shows and putting up with all the angst from contestants.
On The Block we’ve had Anastasia throwing her phone and wallet, and then last week’s episode saw them walk off the show.
And House Rules didn’t fair much better last year with Brooke telling other contestants to ‘suck an egg’ and being branded the show’s ‘vilan’.
At times it seems as though there is more drama on these shows than an episode of Days of our lives. What happened to it being a renovation show?
And maybe the rest of Australia feels the same way with ratings down by more than 20% on The Block this year. You have to wonder if the Home Reno show has had its day.
Time will tell though as both major channels get set to release new home renovation series soon.
Channel 9 is has a new show ‘renovation Rumble’ for which they have reportedly signed up past contestants from Seven’s House Rules. To compete Seven is releasing a new series of House Rules, which promises more twists and turns than ever before.
It will be interesting to see what happens in this sector of the reality TV market in the coming months.
